Dear host family,
how do you begin a letter for people, who you don't know? Quite hard to believe that we are going to spend a couple of months together! Anyway, first of all I want to thank you for just thinking about being a host family for me. I am sure such a step is not a small decision and not an easy thing to do without knowing the person who will live with you for a whole year. To show you that I am a suitable exchange student for you, you can gain an insight into my life with this letter.
My name is Tanja Dördelmann and I am 15 years old until I turn 16 on May 25th. I live in Soest where I also was born. Soest is a little town in the west of Germany / North Rhine-Westphalia.
I’ve got a sister named Saskia, who is five years younger than me (10). My mother Maria is 41 years old, is an Italian and works as a cashier in an ice-sport-centre. My dad Jörg died 2006 when he was only 42 years old. He had a deep influence on me and he was such a wonderful man, so I miss him very much. Last but not least we also have a pet, a girl cat called Holly. She has been living with us for one year now and she eats and sleeps all day long but she is very lovely.
I attend the Archi-Gymnasium, which is not far away from my home, so it takes only ten minutes to go there by foot. In school, my favourite subjects are English, German, Latin and Geography but it always depends on the topic. I am one of approximately 1000 students.
School is totally different in Germany from Australia. I was really overwhelmed when I read all the subjects, clubs and sport teams which school offers. Our school has no sport team and I can only dream of subjects like “Visual Communication and Design”. Here school life and private life are more differentiated. I am lucky with my class. I think we have a particularly good class spirit. I have got a very good relationship with almost all and have some of my best friends in class.
I am also a member of the school’s Musical Club, which performs a different musical every year. This year it was called "Musical Emotions" which was like a summary of many other musicals like "Cats", "The Phantom of the Opera" or "Disney's the Lion King". I love it very much, because there are so many nice people and it is just great to stand on stage!
In my spare time I like to meet my friends. My best friends are Kimberly and Diana, who I spend most of the time with at the weekend. Sometimes we just watch TV, meet to have a coffee or do something else that’s fun. Both are crazy and that’s why I like them so much. We know each other since we came to Archi-Gymnasium. Furthermore I have a lot of hobbies, like chatting with my friends, reading magazines, hanging around or playing with my cat Holly. But my biggest hobby is dancing. I dance as well partner-dancing as Hip Hop. I dance twice a week, it is the visualization of music and I love this art to express my feelings.
But I also spent quite a lot of time with my mom, who is always there when I need an advice or someone to talk to. My family is a very important part of my life and we all get along well, even though there are sometimes disagreements we solve in conversations. Our relationship is very good and I am happy to have them as my family. I trust them and they support me and my decision to do an exchange year in Australia. It makes me proud, that my family says they can send me to another country in the certainty, knowing that I will behave well.
I try to be a good family member but I also try to live my own personality. The same applies to my friends or to my class at school. I would say that I am a quite normal girl trying to live a quite normal life, yet. I am always very eager to experience new people and new ways of life. I think, the more you have seen in life, the better can you decide what is good or not good for your own life.
