Personal Essay (STS)

hey,
ich hab auch grad meinen brief fertig geschrieben, allerdings erstmal auf deutsch, muss ihn dann noch auf spanisch übersetzen (hülfe) es wär totaaaaaaal lieb von euch, wenn ihr den durchlesen würdet und mir sagt, wie ihr ihn findet und was ich noch verbessern könnte!!! Würde mir wirklich helfen!

Liebe zukünftige Gastfamilie!

Wie fängt man einen Brief an Menschen an, die man überhaupt nicht kennt? Ziemlich schwer zu glauben, dass wie bald ein ganzes Jahr lang zusammen leben werden!
Erst einmal möchte ich mich an dieser Stelle für eure Gastfreundschaft bedanken, für die Bereitschaft, mich für zehn Monate bei euch aufzunehmen. Damit ihr euch vergewissern könnt, dass ich die geeignete Austauschschülerin für euch bin, will ich hier einen kleinen Einblick in mein Leben geben.

Ich heiße xy, aber jeder nennt mich nur Nina. Mein Geburtstag war am xy 19xx, heute bin ich also 16 Jahre alt. Zusammen mit meiner Mutter, meinem Vater und meiner jüngeren Schwester lebe ich in xy. Zur Familie gehören außerdem unsere zwei mongolischen Wüstenrennmäuse, Shirin und Cariña.
Zu meinen Eltern und meiner Schwester habe ich ein sehr gutes Verhältnis. Zwar gibt es manchmal kleine Streitereien, aber das ist schließlich normal.

Ich bin eine überzeugte Nichtraucherin. Meine Freunde beschreiben mich als einen freundlichen, fröhlichen, hilfsbereiten, aber manchmal ein wenig dickköpfigen Menschen. Ich bin keine Vegetarierin und ich bin nicht getauft, ich gehöre also keiner bestimmten Religion an.

Köln ist zwar eine Großstadt, aber xy, wo wir wohnen, ist ein kleinerer Stadtteil, sodass ich nicht mitten im Trubel der Innenstadt lebe. Trotzdem fahre ich fast jeden Tag dorthin, denn meine Schule, das xy, befindet sich in der Innenstadt. Mit der Bahn brauche ich aber nur eine halbe Stunde bis zur Schule.
Zurzeit besuche ich die zehnte Klasse und mein Lieblingsfach ist Englisch. Generell machen Fremdsprachen mir sehr viel Spaß und fallen mir auch relativ leicht.
Leider habe ich am FWG aber keine Möglichkeit, Spanisch zu lernen. Weil ich das aber unbedingt will, ist die Möglichkeit, diese Sprache zu erlernen, eine wichtige Motivation für einen Auslandsaufenthalt in Spanien.

Ein weiteres großes Hobby von mir sind Tiere. Allen voran natürlich meine beiden Rennmäuse, aber ich bin auch gerne mit anderen Tieren zusammen, eigentlich mag ich fast alle Tiere. Außerdem bin ich seit mehreren Jahren begeisterte Reiterin, ich nehme aber nicht an Turnieren teil, sondern bin Freizeitreiterin. So fahre ich auch seit vier Jahren regelmäßig zwei bis drei Mal im Jahr mit meiner Schwester auf einen Reiterhof, wo ich auch seit zwei Jahren mit einer Freundin zusammen als Betreuerin tätig bin.
Ansonsten lese ich sehr gerne, am liebsten Krimis, aber auch sonst alles Mögliche. Mit meiner Schwester zusammen mache ich ein bis zwei Mal pro Woche Wing Tsun, eine chinesische Kampfkunst, was mir auch viel Spaß macht.
Außerdem telefoniere ich gerne, treffe mich mit Freundinnen, gehe ins Kino usw. Allerdings bin ich nicht so der „Party-Typ“, sondern eher ein Familienmensch. Ich bin auch sehr gerne mit kleineren Kindern zusammen und habe schon einige Erfahrungen als Babysitterin, Tutorin etc., weil mir der Umgang mit Kindern einfach großen Spaß macht.

Einen Austausch will ich schon ziemlich lange machen, zum einen wegen meiner Begeisterung für Sprachen, zum anderen, weil ich eine fremde Kultur kennen lernen möchte und zwar nicht als Tourist, sondern sozusagen von „innen drin“. Natürlich möchte ich mich auch persönlich weiterentwickeln, aber vor allem fasziniert mich diese einmalige Gelegenheit, als Fremde in ein Land zu gehen, ohne Menschen und Sprache zu kennen und zurückzukehren mit einer neuen „Heimat“, neuen Freundschaften und vielleicht –hoffentlich- sogar mit einer zweiten Familie in Spanien.
Ich war noch nie so richtig in Spanien, nur ein paar Mal auf Mallorca, als ich noch klein war und daher freue ich mich umso mehr darauf, dieses Land und seine Kultur so richtig intensiv kennen zu lernen – und hoffentlich Flamenco zu lernen, wenn ich die Gelegenheit dazu habe !

Naja, ich hoffe jetzt mal, dass ich nichts Wichtiges vergessen habe!
Ansonsten danke ich euch, dass ihr euch die Zeit genommen habt, meinen Brief zu lesen und vielleicht bin ich ja die richtige Austauschschülerin für euch!

Dear Host Family,

I know I am supposed to write something about myself but this is not very easy. I think it is always very difficult to write about personal things, not only because they are personal, but also because they are hard to describe.

However, I enjoy family life. I believe, in a family you can learn responsibility, but you also learn to stand up for your rights. At least, this is what I try to do in my family.
I love my parents and my sister (most of the time), although sometimes we have totally different opinions about things. But it is important to have different opinions, because then you can learn to make your point clear. On the other hand you learn to accept other opinions.
I know this always sounds good in theory but it is often very difficult to practise it in real family life. So I sometimes may accept a different opinion about something, but that does not mean that my own opinion about this has changed. However, I am sure that many people have this problem too.

I try to be a good family member but I also try to live my own personality. The same applies to my friends or to my class at school. I would say that I am a quite normal girl trying to live a quite normal life, yet, I am always very eager to experience new people and new ways of life. I think, the more you have seen in life, the better can you decide what is good or not good for your own life.

The decision to spend a school year in the United States was easy to make for me. I always was fascinated by the United States, the way of life, the school spirit and so on. Furthermore I like the language very much and later I would like to be an English teacher. And so I hope to learn more about the United States and the language, but also to have a nice year with you.

cononny: Ich find deinen Brief echt super. Gibt nen guten Einblick in dein Leben. Aber willst du dir nicht noch mal überlegen, ob du das mit dem, dass du nicht gerne afuräumst und unordentlich bist nicht lieber weglassen? Könnte mir vorstellen, dass das manche zurückschreckt und denken du würdest überhaupt nicht aufräumen oder so.

allybally: Deinen Brief hab ich noch nicht gelesen, antworte dir aber dann auch noch. Muss jetzt bloß weg.

das blöde an meinem letter den ich schreiben muss is, dass ich eigentlich nicht nochmal die sachen von vorher (d.h. hobbys usw....wurde da auf der seit vorher gefragt!)in den brief reinschreiben sollte...

mhh, naja *lol* ich muss nur noch meinen eigenen hinkriegen =) ich finde es so schwer, weil ich noch net weiß in welches gastland ich komme.und ich hab bei afs so völlige gegensätze wie z B thailand und argentienien angegeben. da muss man ja schon mehr aufpassen,was man schreibt. hattet ihr ein ähnliches prob?

Eure Briefe!!! Die sind jawohl alle soooooooooooooo guuuut!!! Meiner dagegen ist GRAUSAM!!!

ich muss auch grad die zwei seiten für STS schreiben. ich will nach italien gehen und muss deshalb in italienisch schreiben, womit ich irgendwie überfordert bin. Ich weiß noch nicht mal, was gastfamilie heißt und da ich niemanden kenne, der italienisch spricht, kann mir niemand helfen . in jedem satz kann ich mindestens zweimal einfach nur raten und manche sachen muss ich weglassen, weil ich sie nicht ausdrücken kann. irgendwie frustrierend. in dieser woche muss ich die 2 seiten fertig machen, oh gott!!! so, jetzt hab ich einfach mal mein selbstmitleid rausgelassen.

noch ne bitte. könnt ihr das "§schnell" duchsehn???? ich hab jetzt am montag also in knapp 3 tagen mein vorstellungsgespräch un da muss ich den mitnehmen....

And I really like cooking. I have a recipe book in which I look for a good-looking recipe to cook . Till now we could eat everything (my parents said it tasted well).
I really like all kind of flowers especially geraniums and sunflowers. Also gerbera I find class.
Also I love to eat. It also a kind of hobby and I nearly eat everything out of spinach and sprout. My favourite meal is Lasagne and all other noodles. Also I like potato things.

I have 2 best friends and still another handful very good ones. I spend a majority of my spare time with them hire with the most diverse things. We have always very much fun and laugh most time. Also with my problems I can come at any time to them.
Also our entire class community is very good. Our chief instructor says for example that we are rather moderate from the notes, but however humanly grandiose. We help each other with homework and before tests we practise together in little groups. It prevails gives and takes with us. I am anyhow very content with my grade and also with the teachers.

I am a convinced non-smoker. My friends describe me as positive thinking, funny, honest, sincere, spontaneous and full of ideas. I describe me myself as a tolerant, sociable, lively and open-minded person. I think I am not very arrogant or supercilious.
Sometimes I am a bit forgetful, but only sometimes not whole of the time.

I would like to experience more over the way of life and the culture in New Zealand. In addition I would like to experience something what is perfectly new. A practical aspect is also which I can improve my English knowledge around a multiple. But this isn't so important for me. All these great new experiences I am never forgotten. Me in a new environment to integrate and find connection to other teenagers I see as a large challenge and I hope to find new friends.

I would like to thank you for taking time to read this letter and maybe I am the right exchange student for your family.

Dear Host family,

Here is my personal letter for you. I hope that it is like you expected. Will try to describe myself quite well and hope you get a first impression of me, my family and my life.
My name is Katharina Stock, but all my friends calling me Kathi. I am 15 years old and my birthday is on the 7th of April. My parents Ute (41 years old) and Rolf (47 years old), my little sister Theresa (9 years old) and me living in a very little village near Cologne called Dattenfeld it is in the west of Germany near the border to the Netherlands. With my parents I get on very well, only sometimes there are little arguments, but I think that is normal. My little sister talks very much and with her I have a bit more arguments, but she is sometimes very nice and lovely.
Here is nearly nothing because Dattenfeld is really little. Not more than a supermarket and a few stores. Yes, and we have a station and with the train you can get quick to Cologne or to Siegburg, the next city.
But we have a beautiful landscape here: little hills, a river (only a little one) called “Sieg” and some old buildings. Everything is calm and peaceful.
You notice everything here is little (I am not the biggest too).

I am going on a Grammar School called Bodelschwingh Grammar School. It is near Dattenfeld in a village called Herchen (you can imagine it is also little). At the moment I am in the 10th grade. My favourite subjects are history, german and politics.

I have two pets. The first one is a whole black tomcat. His name is Romeo and he is totally crazy. My second pet is mouse with a long name: Joe-Henry. He is brown and a bit white. I really love them it is a good feeling to hear my cat purring beside me. It is like a kind of meditation for me.

I have a lot of hobbies. Although I’m not very sportive I am playing Tennis in a little club here in the village. Other hobbies are reading, cooking, meeting my friends and going to the cinema. My favourite book is a German one called “Engel&Joe” and also the film to this book is very good. It is about a love in the punk-scene of Berlin. There are a lot of films I like very much. Pirates of the Caribbean (Johnny Depp is my favourite actor), The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it is the strangest film I ever seen, and Brother bear (I love Disney films).
I also like the actor playing the leading role in Angel&Joe: Robert Stadlober from Austria. One part my spare time spend I reading on my bed, which is by the way my favourite place in my room. I have an enormous amount of books. I white no more where I it all to accommodate am not.
I can hear music for hours. For example HIM (a band from Finland), Billy Idol, Bob Marley (Really great music, he was a genius) and some German stuff like “Die Ärzte” or “Die Toten Hosen”. But my absolute favourite is HIM. I love their music. The lead singer has a great and big voice. I was on a concert of them in this April and it was really fantastic.

ja ich schreibe irgendwie immer die hälfte in klammern, ne ziemlich blöde angewohnheit; ))
aber ich hab nicht gemeint, dass die gastfamilie erwachsener wird sondern das "you" soll als "man" übersetzt werden!?
hehe und das mit dem disskutieren.... das ist wirklich eine meiner lieblingsbeschäftigungen.. aber ich versuch dann mal das irgendwie ein bisschen anders zu formulieren oder teils wegzulassen.. naja..
